MA THIRD FAV ANIME...GUNDAM WING!! IF YOU HAVE NOT HEARD OR SEEN IT HERE IS A REVIEW THANKS TO REVIEW.THEOTAKU.COM
Gundam Wing is a 49-episode TV series that focuses predominantly on politics and war. It is the story of a group of five young boys who have been trained from birth to pilot high-tech mechs known only as "Gundam." These mechs are powerful enough to bring destruction down upon an entire army.
The Gundam pilots were trained to battle a group known as "OZ," which takes over the government on Earth and wishes to suppress Earth's many space colonies. As OZ and the Gundam pilots face-off, new political groups will form and old ones will dissipate. Old wars will be ended and new wars will immediately begin. Gundam Wing is the story of how war just never seems to end.
This review shall begin by stating off the bat that if you're a huge fan of mecha-anime, Gundam Wing will definitely appeal to you. The Gundams are pretty cool to see in action and they are well-developed, as are all the mechs in the series. With that out of the way, what else does Gundam Wing offer beside some hot mechs?
Well, I particularly liked the political message conveyed by the series about how war just never seems to end - it just leads to more war. I also liked the complexity in some of the characters (especially Zechs Merquise) and how they could never find happiness in any of their victories.
Despite those two aforementioned positives though, there was still something missing for me in the series. I felt that, at times, Gundam Wing just seemed to go on-and-on (in circles) and didn't really achieve any satisfactory closure in the end. Though this feature of the show relates to its central theme of the endlessness of war, it didn't make for too entertaining an experience.
The technicals of Gundam Wing were really nice though. The animation was pretty well-done (though some of the characters were quite ridiculous-looking) and the music was really good. (I especially liked the opening score.)
Overall, I have to conclude that Gundam Wing is a mixed blessing of an anime series. It takes a lot of concentration and focus to sit through it - and I think you have to watch all 49 episodes to fully appreciate everything that happens - but if you like mechs and politics, it just might be worth it.
